Speaking for Your Holiday: A Beginner's First Weeks

October 13, 20264 min read

You have a trip in a few weeks and almost no words. A routine of 10 to 15 minutes a day on an Android phone: the phrases you will really use, said out loud, with a score, and an honest list of what it cannot do.

In short: for a trip you do not need a course. You need the 50 to 100 phrases you will really say, and enough practice that they come out of your mouth. Ask the AI Mentor for them, keep them as flashcards, say them out loud, and rehearse the scenes you expect: the hotel desk, ordering food, asking the way.

This works for any language you can learn in pimReader: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish or Portuguese. It will not make you fluent in a month, and it will not follow every reply from a fast speaker. It can get you through the first sentence of most conversations, which is where a holiday starts.

Before you start

  1. On the first screen, choose the language of your trip and your own language for translations. Let the app download the dictionary. When the vocabulary estimate opens, you know almost no words: leave Word Count at 0 and tap OK.
  2. Decide how many weeks you have. This plan fits four to six; with fewer, do weeks 1 and 3 together.
  3. Pick 10 to 15 minutes a day. Short and daily beats long and rare.

Week 1: the phrases you will need

  • Ask for them (AI). Open Ask AI on Home and write, in your own language if you like: "I am going to Lisbon for a week. Give me 30 Portuguese phrases for the airport, the hotel, restaurants, shops and directions, with translations." Change the places to fit your trip.
  • Keep them. Ask: "Make flashcards from these phrases." Approve the ones you want. They join your daily reviews (the Exercise card on Home), which work offline. At most 15 new cards a day become ready; the rest wait. You can change this in Settings → Learn schedule.
  • Listen. On the practice screens, tap the speaker button to hear a phrase.
  • Review a few minutes a day. Add about ten phrases a day, not more. If reviews pass 10 minutes, add fewer. When your first cards are scheduled, pimReader asks once on Home whether to remind you when cards are due (Turn on reminders or Not now); you can change this in Settings → Learn schedule.

Week 2: say them out loud

Tap the Practice card on Home (it appears once you have words to learn), pick a mode, choose Custom theme and type a scene, for example "restaurant". Tap the microphone and say a phrase. You get a pronunciation score from 0 to 100 and tips.

Treat the score as a hint, not a verdict. A noisy room or a strong accent can lower it. Repeat a phrase until it feels easy, then move on.

Weeks 3 and 4: rehearse the scenes

Tap the Practice card on Home and choose Practice Dialogs for a conversation, line by line: a café, a hotel desk, a taxi. Or open Ask AI → Speaking practice and ask for a role play: "You are a waiter in a small restaurant in Lisbon. I am a customer. Keep it short and slow."

Say your lines out loud, not only in your head. Then do it again without looking at the screen.

The last days before you travel

  1. Download the dictionary for your language, and open the app once with internet so everything is ready. Reviews work offline; AI needs internet.
  2. Go through your due cards once a day.
  3. Save the five phrases you will need most (water, bill, help, "I don't understand", "slower, please") where you can find them fast, for example as a note.
  4. Say your top ten phrases out loud once more on the way to the airport.

What it won't do

  • It won't make you fluent in a few weeks, or help you follow fast native speech. A taxi driver is harder than the practice voice.
  • It won't teach grammar step by step. Ask the AI to explain a phrase when you want to know why.
  • It is not a phrasebook with every situation. You ask for the situations you need. The AI can be wrong sometimes, so check a key phrase (an allergy, a medicine) with a native speaker or a printed phrasebook.
  • Speaking practice needs a microphone and internet. There is no typed substitute.
  • You can learn only English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish or Portuguese. Other holiday languages are not available.
  • It cannot translate a photo of a menu or a sign.
  • pimReader is a personal app; it has no class or teacher features.
  • It works on Android phones and tablets. iPhone, Mac and Windows versions are coming soon.

Reading, translations and daily reviews (the Exercise card on Home) are free; Ask AI, Practice, Practice Dialogs and speaking scores use AI, which is part of pimReader Plus. When you open an AI feature, pimReader offers Try free for a month: no card, no account, nothing renews. Tap Not now to carry on without AI.
