A Language for Your Job: Speak First, Then Read

October 11, 20263 min read

A short daily routine built around your own job: an AI Mentor course with your work words, spoken practice with feedback, and the texts you meet at work.

In short: tell the AI Mentor about your job, practise speaking for a few minutes every day, then read real work texts with translations. Ten to twenty minutes a day. The AI parts need an internet connection.

This guide works for the languages pimReader teaches: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Portuguese. Some examples: Polish for a shop or office job, English for a job interview or a trade, German to talk with colleagues.

Start with your job, not with a textbook

A general course starts with hotels and holidays. You may need "delivery", "invoice", "shift" and "safety helmet" first.

Open Ask AI on Home and tap Help me to learn …. Then describe your situation in your own words. For example:

"I am an electrician. I start a job in Ireland in three months. My English is B1. I need to talk with my team, understand safety rules, and pass a job interview. I have 15 minutes a day."

The AI Mentor asks a few questions and then proposes a course: a list of lessons. Read it. If something is missing, say so, for example "add a lesson on phone calls with customers". Nothing is saved until you approve it, and you approve the plan once.

Each lesson can have a short lesson book to read, flashcards, and a quiz. You find your course under Studies on Home.

Speak early

Start speaking in the first week, even if it feels awkward. Do not wait until you feel ready.

There are three ways to practise speaking:

  • Speaking practice. In Ask AI, tap Speaking practice. You talk with the AI by voice, and it answers by voice. A lesson can have its own speaking practice too.
  • Train speech. In any text, select a sentence, open the menu (⋮) and tap Train speech. Say the sentence. You see what you were meant to say, what the phone heard, a score, and short notes on what to fix.
  • Practice Dialogs. Tap the Practice card on Home, choose Practice Dialogs, and pick Custom theme. Type your situation, for example "first day at a warehouse" or "job interview for a nurse". You get a dialog to read, listen to, and say line by line, with the same feedback. (The Practice card appears once you have some words to learn.)

Short and often is better than long and rare. Two minutes of speaking every day is a good start.

Then read what you meet at work

Speaking gives you confidence. Reading gives you the words.

Open the texts you will meet at work: a safety sheet, a product manual, a job advert, news about your trade. pimReader opens EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, TXT, HTML and Markdown files, and web pages. You can share a web page from your browser to pimReader to read it there.

Words you don't know are coloured, with a small translation above them. Tap a word for the full dictionary entry. If a word comes up again and again, tick Memorize. The app brings it back later in your daily reviews (the Exercise card on Home).

Reading and the dictionary are free.

A daily routine, 10–20 minutes

  1. 2–5 minutes: do your daily reviews (the Exercise card on Home). They grow as you add words; if they pass 10 minutes, add fewer new words.
  2. 5 minutes: speak. One Practice Dialog, or a few sentences with Train speech.
  3. 5–10 minutes: read. The next part of your lesson, or one real work text.
  4. On busy days: only step 1 and step 2. Speaking is the part that fades fastest.

Once a week, open Speaking practice and talk for a little longer. Pretend it is your first day at work.

Limits

  • The AI needs internet. Courses, Practice, speaking practice and speech feedback all use AI. Without a connection they do not work. Reading, the dictionary and reviews still work offline.
  • The AI can make mistakes. Check important words with a colleague, your employer or an official source. This matters most for safety rules, medicine, contracts and anything legal.
  • Speech recognition is not perfect. Your phone may mishear you, especially with a strong accent or background noise. A low score does not always mean you said it wrong. The written notes can also come in English instead of your own language.
  • It is not a teacher and it is not a certificate. If your job needs an official language level, you still need the official exam.
  • Android only, for now. iPhone, Mac and Windows versions are coming soon.

Most of this routine uses AI, which is part of pimReader Plus. When you open an AI feature, pimReader offers Try free for a month: no card, no account, nothing renews. Tap Not now to carry on without AI.
